Wash the chip with soap and water, then dry it completely. If you have a Preferred or Platinum kit, use the included wax & grease remover wipe to clean the area, wiping in one direction to lift any remaining contaminants. The surface must be completely clean and dry before paint will adhere properly. -
Step 2: Prime the Pen Tip
Before your first use of each pen (colorcoat, clearcoat, or primer), shake it well and press the tip down onto a soft surface a few times to saturate it—typically 3 to 5 pumps. Wipe away any excess paint that builds up on the tip with a clean cloth. -
Step 3: Apply Primer (If Needed)
If the chip exposes bare metal or plastic, apply 1–2 coats of primer first (included in Preferred and Platinum kits). Let the primer dry for 15–30 minutes before moving on to colorcoat. -
Step 4: Apply Colorcoat
Tips:
- Stay within the chip boundaries—avoid overlapping onto surrounding good paint
- Use minimal pressure and let capillary action pull the paint into the chip
- For deeper chips, build up several thin layers instead of one thick application
Use a light dabbing motion to fill the chip with paint. Don't drag the pen or paint like a marker—gently touch the tip to the chip and let the paint flow into the damaged area on its own. Build coverage gradually with thin layers rather than one heavy coat.
Wait 15 minutes between colorcoat applications. Apply 2–3 thin coats until the chip is filled level with the surrounding paint. After the final colorcoat layer, wait 30 minutes before applying clearcoat.

Shake the clearcoat pen for 1–2 minutes, then prime the tip the same way you did in Step 2. Apply 2–3 thin coats of clearcoat over the dried colorcoat, waiting 15 minutes between each layer. Clearcoat seals in the color and restores gloss to the repair.
Allow 48 hours for the repair to fully cure before washing or waxing the area. The finish continues to harden and blend in with the surrounding paint during this time.
